Maserati Levante MY22: GT, Modena and Trofeo
The design concept of the Levante combines coupé lines with interior space for five people and exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. “The Maserati of SUVs” is instantly recognisable from a distance, thanks to its imposing grille inspired by the sensational Alfieri concept car, but also pays homage to historic Maserati cars like the Tipo 60 Birdcage. With the MY21, the look of the Levante’s front had already been updated to feature the innovative front grille with tuning fork design. This front grille comes in chrome for the GranLusso trim and Piano Black for the GranSport.
The three new trim levels – GT, Modena and Trofeo – have been developed not only to meet all customers’ requirements and expectations, but also to epitomise the various over-arching themes of the Maserati range: innovation, performance and design.
The Brand’s DNA is thus expressed in unique proposals, the result of the synergy that has played out between the Centro Stile Maserati and the Product Development Team, on research into materials, design cues and dedicated features.
From a stylistic point of view, the three new trim levels (GT, Modena and Trofeo) feature the new Maserati logo on the bonnet (included in the range from the MC20 onwards), new Trident logo on the C-pillar and refreshed lettering on the rear. There is also a specific trim level badge (bearing the wording “GT”, “Modena” or “Trofeo”) on the sides, just above the three iconic air intakes. The new Maserati lettering appears on the central screen as well, as does the new “Trofeo” logo on the headrests.
Just like the previous MY21 version, Levante MY22 features taillights with the boomerang design that recalls the history of the Trident Brand.
GT trim level
GT embodies the brand’s most urban, minimal and contemporary spirit. It is well suited to dynamic and curious global citizens who pay attention to fashion, yet have a refined style of their own.
Levante GT is equipped with a four-cylinder 330-hp Mild Hybrid engine.*
Externally, this trim level embellishes the models in the range with chrome-plated accents, plus 18” alloy wheels.
Completing the look of the interior are leather comfort seats and the Piano Black Trim.
Levante GT Hybrid pairs the two-litre four-cylinder internal combustion engine with a 48-volt Hybrid system that can recover energy when decelerating to brake. In perfect harmony with its DNA, Maserati has selected a hybrid solution that aims most of all at maintaining performance, whilst simultaneously reducing consumption.
The result achieved is outstanding: improved performance and lower consumption. The same engine excellence and performance as the petrol V6 is maintained, although consumption is reduced, making the Levante GT Hybrid even more efficient than the Levante versions fitted with either a petrol or diesel V6 engine. Levante GT Hybrid offers drivers a car that is fun to drive, with the sound of a true Maserati. It combines the smoothness of a six-cylinder engine with the low rev counts of a diesel engine, with significant offsetting of CO2 emissions: 20% lower than petrol and 8% down compared to diesel alone, according to WLTP data.
The 48-volt Maserati hybrid system consists of four components: BSG, battery, e-Booster and a DC/DC converter.
The Belt Starter Generator (BSG) acts as an alternator, recovering energy when braking and decelerating, and charging the battery located in the boot, which in turn powers the e-Booster fitted to the engine.
The purpose of including an electric compressor in the car is to support and work in conjunction with the conventional turbocharger, assisting the engine to deliver power at low rev counts. The operating strategy of the hybrid system always keeps the e-Booster available if needed, using the battery or BSG.
The pairing of BSG and e-Booster gives a further boost even when the engine is running at full capacity in Sport mode, when all the benefits of performance can be fully exploited. In Normal mode, it is used to balance consumption and performance.
The entire Levante GT Hybrid is designed in search of the best performance.
The hybrid car weighs less than its counterpart with a six-cylinder engine (petrol and diesel), but most of all it has an improved weight distribution, thanks to the engine being the front and the battery in the rear. Even so, the load capacity is not compromised and the vehicle’s weight is optimally balanced. Together with the compact hybrid system, the lighter engine weighs 20 kg less than the version fitted with the 350-hp V6, and 115 kg less than the diesel, which also improves the 50:50 weight distribution.
All this makes the Levante GT Hybrid even more manageable and fun to drive.
The four-cylinder, two-litre engine is the result of in-depth engineering work conducted at the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena on the internal mechanical components, to achieve higher torque and power from the turbocharger and e-Booster. The engine electronics have also changed completely, switching to one of the latest Bosch control units. The engine is produced at Termoli.
Courtesy of the 330 hp of maximum power and the peak torque of 450 Nm @ 2,250 rpm – more than 90% of which can be achieved from 1,750 rpm, the performance of the Levante GT Hybrid, which still comes with all-wheel drive, are vitally important: maximum speed of 245 km/h, 0 to 100 km/h possible in 6 seconds, impressive power-to-weight ratio with 165 hp/L. Most of all, it clocks up the advantage of significantly lower gCO2/km emissions, in the WLTP cycle now between 220 and 243 gCO2/km with savings on fuel consumption of over 20% compared to the 350-hp V6 version whilst maintaining the same level of performance.
Thanks to the “sailing” function, the Levante Hybrid improves its efficiency in terms of emissions and fuel consumption. This result is made possible by the system that disconnects the gearbox when decelerating, available in the “Increased Control and Efficiency” drive mode.
The Levante Hybrid remains the “Maserati of SUVs” through and through, including for its sound that retains the usual characteristics of any other Trident-brand car, despite being a hybrid. The sound is achieved with no use of amplifiers, solely by acting on the fluid dynamics of the exhausts and using resonators, tuned to produce that characteristic sound. From the moment you get into a hybrid Maserati onwards, you still hear the unmistakable sound of a Maserati engine.
* In the USA and in markets where the Levante Hybrid is not available, the GT trim level is equipped with the 350-hp V6 engine.
Modena trim level
Aimed at customers who love the world of sport, the Modena is intended as a means to make the very best of your time and surroundings. For those looking for a balance between innate elegance, dynamism and driving pleasure.
The Levante Modena is equipped with the 350-hp V6 petrol engine**.
It is also available in the 430-hp Modena S version.
These latest-generation high-performance Maserati engines, all Euro 6C-approved, are powerful, bold and eco-friendly, made possible by Auto Start & Stop technology. Designed by Maserati Powertrain in collaboration with Ferrari, they consist of two low inertia turbines mounted in parallel, double continuous cam phasing for each cylinder head and high-pressure (200-bar) direct injection. Peak torque is achieved well below 2,000 rpm, ensuring exceptional daily driveability.
As in the best Maserati tradition, the exhaust of the petrol engine is managed by pneumatically controlled valves, to maintain the brand’s classic and luxurious imprint. In the default Normal mode, the bypass valves are closed to ensure a comfortable and discreet engine sound.
In Sport mode, the valves open and the flow of exhaust fumes is channelled to expel them directly via the double polished steel pipe terminals located under the rear bumper. These ensure top performance and the unmistakable sound of a Maserati engine. With 430 hp of power at 5,750 rpm and torque of 580 Nm between 1,750 and 5,000 rpm in Sport mode, the Levante Modena S driving experience is very exciting. In Normal mode, torque is 500 Nm at low rev counts and reaches a peak of 580 Nm at 5,000 rpm.
The V6 engine offers advanced valve control technology, continuous cam phasing for each cylinder head, dual turbocharger and direct injection system. The Levante S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and clocks up a top speed of 264 km/h. According to data from the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) – a more accurate reflection of real-world driving conditions, this 430-hp engine gives the competition a run for its money in terms of fuel consumption (11.8 L/100 km) and CO2 emissions (273 g/km).
The 350-hp V6 engine also provides an extraordinary driving experience with low fuel consumption, delivering torque of 500 Nm from 1,750 to 5,000 rpm. With this engine on board, the basic version of the Levante accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 251 km/h, whilst according to WLTP data in the combined cycle, fuel consumption is 11.6 L/100 km and it emits 270 gCO2/km.
The Modena trim level emphasises its athletic features, with sporty bumpers, Piano Black accents and 20” alloy wheels. In the cabin, every detail is reminiscent of the driving pleasure typical of the Brand, with the enveloping leather sports seats, the Piano Black Trim interior.
Conversely, the Modena S trim includes the features of the Nerissimo Pack and red brake calipers.
** On the American market, Levante Modena is equipped with the 430-hp V6 engine and is also available in the Modena S trim with a 550-hp V8.
Trofeo trim level
Trofeo embodies maximum Maserati performance, specifically in terms of its ratings. This trim level is suited to fans of extreme performance. It constitutes the top of the range as a trim and most of all in terms of performance, with its powerful 580-hp twin-turbo V8 engine. To complete the look of the exterior, carbon fibre finishes, 21” alloy wheels and red brake calipers. The interior is exclusive, with sports seats in “Full-Grain” natural leather.
Levante Trofeo represents an extreme dimension, faster and with even higher performance, but always unquestionably elegant and safe.
The V8 in the Levante Trofeo is an evolution of the engine in the flagship Quattroporte GTS. It has the same 3.8-litre displacement and the same 90° “V” layout, but has been redesigned with major advancements to deliver 580 hp of power in Europe (590 hp in other markets) at 6,250 rpm and a peak torque of 730 Nm at 2,500-5,000 rpm.
It is the Maserati engine with the highest horsepower/litre ratio ever (156 hp/L) and is the most powerful V8 in the Trident’s history. Like all Maserati petrol engines, it is assembled at the Ferrari plant in Maranello.
This powerful V8 twin-turbo engine has been redesigned to reflect the Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive. To make room for the drive shaft in the direction of the front axle, Maserati has designed a new crankcase with a special crankshaft configuration, a new model of oil pump and auxiliary belt, as well as a different electrical wiring scheme.
Given the Levante Trofeo’s maximum power objectives, a new calibration of the engine mapping would not have been sufficient; the technical department has therefore taken a great deal of action on the engine components.
Two new parallel twin-scroll turbochargers have been introduced, one for each bank, with a special turbine wheel configuration, to ensure a higher flow. Each turbocharger is powered with fresh air by a single intercooler.
The high-turbulence cylinder heads have also been redesigned and equipped with a different model of camshafts and valves to increase combustion efficiency, improve performance and reduce fuel consumption. So the car can deliver its maximum power, not only has the engine mapping been recalibrated, but other internal components have also been redesigned, including the pistons and connecting rods.
Like all other versions of the Levante, the Trofeo is equipped with eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, universally appreciated for its versatility and sporty character.
To enhance the sporty nature of the Levante, the new Corsa driving mode has been introduced, in addition to the Normal, I.C.E., Sport and Off Road modes.
When the Corsa mode is activated by pressing the "Sport/Corsa" button on the centre console twice, the driver immediately perceives improved engine responsiveness at the slightest acceleration, with the unmistakable sound of the Maserati engine generated by the free flow of exhaust gases through the fully open valves.
The Corsa mode is exclusive to the Levante Trofeo and is also aimed at ensuring faster shifts, lower positioning of the air suspension, a sportier damping of the Skyhook system and optimised settings for the Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive. With this ultra-sporty mode activated, the action of the traction control systems and ESP is limited, guaranteeing maximum driving pleasure.
The eight-speed ZF automatic gear lever has been redesigned for a more intuitive shift, with a lower stroke and improved functionality. The gearbox can be operated in both automatic mode (RND) and manually, simply by pulling the lever from right to left. The “M” button has therefore been removed from the central console, plus the Sport and Corsa driving modes and the sports setup of the Skyhook system can all be selected separately. A new “P” button has been added to the gear lever, to easily set the transmission to parking mode.
The Launch Control function can only be activated in Corsa mode, with the gear lever in “D” or “M” position. To activate the Launch Control function and display confirmation on the instrument panel, when the car is stationary and the steering wheel is straight, the driver needs to operate the steering wheel gear shift lever and push the brake pedal at the same time. If the driver accelerates in full with the brake pedal still pressed, the engine rev count will rise. When the brake pedal is released, the car will start at full speed.
The Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive has been designed to offer the typical Maserati rear-wheel drive experience, but has been refined according to the specific requirements of the Levante Trofeo. In normal driving situations, the Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive delivers 100% of the torque to the rear wheels. In low-grip conditions (on slippery or unstable surfaces) or if traction is lost on the rear axle, the system switches from delivering 100% traction to the rear wheels to a 50:50 split between the axles, in just 150 milliseconds.
The Levante Trofeo is fitted as standard with a rear limited-slip differential (LSD), which ensures optimal traction in all driving situations. The asymmetrical locking function varies from 25% lock under load to 35% on release.
In addition to the LSD self-locking differential and the Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive, the sportiness of the Levante is greatly accentuated by torque vectoring: on corners, the system distributes more torque to the outer wheels by applying a slight braking force on the inner wheels.
Exceptional performance and driving pleasure have always formed part of the Levante’s DNA. These two qualities now reach their true apex in the new top-of-the-range Trofeo model. With the adoption of the V8 engine, the car’s kerb weight is only 60 kg greater than in the previous V6 petrol versions. In light of the exceptional increase in power (at least 160 hp higher than the Levante S), the Trofeo therefore boasts a best-in-class weight/power ratio, of 3.7 kg/hp (European version) and 3.6 kg/hp (other markets).
The body features extraordinary rigidity and a very low centre of gravity, as well as an ideal 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear axles, typical of all Levante versions.
Combined with the sophisticated double-wishbone and rear five-arm Multlink suspension, as well as larger tyres (265/35 in the front and 295/30 in the rear) mounted on 22” forged aluminium rims, these qualities guarantee the new Trofeo an exceptional balance on the road and excellent lateral stability, comparable to those of a modern supercar.
The structure of the Levante Trofeo has been designed for the best possible management of the increase in the twin-turbo V8 engine's power and guarantees an exciting driving experience with no compromises in terms of everyday use, comfort on long journeys or active safety.
The air suspension essentially shares the same components and geometry as the other Levante models. The suspension frame, quadrilateral, strut, turrets and crossbar are all made of a lightweight alloy, using a forming technology that ensures greater rigidity without increasing weight.
The suspension adjustment has been calibrated according to the specific features of the Levante, faster than ever, and is optimized for each driving mode. For the new Corsa mode, Maserati engineers have increased the rigidity of the setup, to maximise the car’s handling.
The pneumatic system includes six setup levels and deviation of 75 mm from the lowest to the highest. In the new Corsa mode, the Levante Trofeo is automatically set to the lowest Aero 2 level (35 mm lower than the normal level).
The Sport Skyhook damping system has also been calibrated to the car’s handling requirements, using the same operating concept.
For the first time in the Levante, the Maserati IVC system has been included in the ESP. IVC uses an effective "feed-forward" control system that predicts various driving situations and adapts the response of the braking system and engine, ensuring exceptional driving dynamics, improving performance and increasing active safety.
The system helps the driver to maintain full control of the car rather than merely correcting “driving errors”, as is the case with conventional ESP systems.
In the specific case of the Levante, the IVC is calibrated to reduce the tendency towards understeer, typical of SUVs. The IVC is supported by the understeer/oversteer function of the electric power steering (EPS), for a more natural and predictable driving experience. The system instantly adjusts the steering wheel torque, ensuring optimum feedback for the driver, especially when driving more sportily.
The braking system offers an excellent response to the Levante Trofeo’s extensive performance requirements. In the front it relies on six-piston aluminium monoblock calipers, paired with 380 mm drilled discs, whilst at the rear it uses aluminium floating calipers with 330 x 22 mm drilled and ventilated discs. The ABS has been specially configured for the V8 version.
